Is film making a comeback?
While looking into the world of film photography for my project, I found within social media and the online photography community, they greatly appreciated the film. Working with film involves a more tactile and hands-on approach compared to digital photography.
Loading film into cameras, manually focusing, and advancing the film between shots all contribute to a more deliberate shooting experience. Looking at the main reason why the film has seen a surge is the aesthetic results it gives. There has been a noticeable resurgence in interest in analogue photography, while digital photography dominates the market and most areas of photography. I have found that many photographers appreciate the unique aesthetic and tactile experience of shooting with film. Buying the film you want for the desired outcome and loading it into your camera adds a more fulfilling experience when shooting. I think the revival of using film adds a more hands-on approach for photographers, bringing back some excitement into shooting photography that may have become mundane for some photographers picking up their digital cameras and shooting / receiving the images immediately. The delayed process of either receiving your photos from the lab and seeing how they have turned out or even developing your own film rolls adds a sense of achievement to your work that some photographers may feel lacks when shooting digital.
Additionally, some find the constraints of shooting on film, such as limited exposures per roll, to be creatively stimulating. As a result, there's been a revival in the popularity of film cameras, film stocks, and even film processing services in recent years.
The aesthetics of film, I believe, play a big part in this surge, too, as no matter how hard you try to edit your photos to look like they were taken on film, nothing compares to the actual outcome of using film. As someone who actively looks on social media and follows various people, I have seen people try to recreate film aesthetics in their photos for years. Now, the progression to disposable film cameras gives an irreplaceable edit to the images.
